Advancing Our hhc Mission with the Eisai US hhceco Center: Our New State-of-the-Art Headquarters

Author: Ivan Cheung, Chairman & CEO, Eisai Inc.

Eisai’s culture is defined by our human health care (hhc) mission, which guides the work we do to help increase the benefits health care provides and brings hope to patients, families and healthcare professionals. In my tenure at Eisai – both in the U.S. and Japan – I have always been impressed by how individuals throughout our organization come together and work as one team to achieve this mission. Individually and collectively.

Introducing the Eisai US hhceco Center

“For more than 30 years, Eisai has been proud to support innovation and job growth in New Jersey through our work to advance human health care and social good for all. With our new U.S. headquarters, we are proud to continue our role as a strong partner supporting local economic growth as we fulfill our commitment to patients, our employees and our communities.” – Haruo Naito, Eisai Global CEO

Our move to the ON3 Campus demonstrates our ongoing commitment to New Jersey and to creating a diverse life sciences hub in one of the most dynamic locations. It also signifies the beginning of a new chapter as we expand our longstanding hhc mission into an ecosystem platform to collaborate with industry, government, medical organizations and the community. Through these collaborations, we strive to deliver breakthrough medicines and new solutions that matter to people and contribute to society. We call this “hhceco.”

“We're excited to welcome the new Eisai US hhceco Center to our very own Nutley, New Jersey. This new collaborative and innovative center will bring hundreds of jobs to our state. New Jersey has become a hub for innovation in many industries, and Eisai's extraordinary innovative research that will take place here will contribute to life-changing scientific and medical solutions for people living with cancer, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.”
– Phil Murphy, Governor of New Jersey, during the Eisai US hhceco Center Grand Opening Ceremony.

This is why we brought together distinguished guests from our federal, state and local communities, advocacy partners and our ON3 neighbors – Hackensack Meridian Health, Hackensack Meridian Center for Discovery and Innovation, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, Quest Diagnostics and the Seton Hall College of Nursing and School of Health and Medical Sciences – to unveil the Eisai US hhceco Center and discuss our shared values for healthcare innovation to benefit the community, the state and society at large. The key to achieving our mission is building and maintaining trust with the communities we serve. We are happy to be part of this dynamic life sciences hub that is uniquely aligned with advancing human health care.

A Company Dedicated to Scientific innovation

Eisai is a company rooted in scientific innovation. To better position us to continue delivering novel therapies, all our drug discovery efforts are aligned around what we called “Deep Human Biology Learning”, in which our scientists focus on harnessing the combined power of human genetics, data sciences and precision chemistry. The path to progress in treating cancers and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s is neither straightforward nor quick, requiring an unwavering focus and longstanding commitment. Our four decades of research in Alzheimer’s disease and difficult-to-treat cancers demonstrate we will never give up until our purpose is achieved.

From the research and development of symptomatic breakthrough treatment in the 1980s and 1990s, to our investigational anti-amyloid protofibril antibody and anti-MTBR tau antibody in late-stage clinical development, Eisai stands at the forefront of Alzheimer’s research. We are determined to identify the root cause and stage of each person’s disease so that we may provide the right intervention including prevention, for the right person, at the right time. We at Eisai are not only dedicated to delivering therapies for Alzheimer’s disease, but also committed to simplifying the patient journey, such as simple blood tests to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, and supporting multi-disciplinary solutions to improve the lives of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners and families.

In oncology, we distill the meaningful time spent with people living with cancer into a motivation that drives the mindset we bring to our daily work. Understanding these experiences fuels our successful development of life-changing therapies for multiple cancer types, as well as the design of impactful and relevant support programs. Cancers evolve as better treatments are being introduced, and we at Eisai are devoted to stay in front of these difficult-to-treat cancers. Patients push their limits to live full lives despite their cancer, so it's the wonderful duty of each Eisai employee to honor that strength and give no less than everything we have.

A Commitment to Employees…

“It is a wonderful milestone we are experiencing. This building is state of the art. Our technology is amazing. It’s great to have everyone in one building. It unites us all in ways that we haven’t before when we occupied two separate buildings.”
– Dilaila Baez, Senior Executive Assistant

As much as the Eisai US hhceco Center is about our contributions to patients and New Jersey’s life sciences community, it is also very much about our employees – the driving force behind our innovations – and our commitment to collaboration. Within this new facility, we have created dedicated space and resources to educate and motivate our employees, encourage collaboration and create a forum for patients, advocacy partners and the community to listen to and learn from each other and positively impact people and society together.

The new Eisai US hhceco Center embodies the Eisai culture, which is defined by our belief in innovating together.  As employees return to the workplace and are taking advantage of what our technologically advanced and efficient office facilities have to offer, we have an important opportunity to rethink and optimize how we collaborate and innovate to bring our science forward. It is incredibly gratifying to hear how our employees are embracing our new headquarters and taking full advantage of everything it has to offer.

…and the Local Community

A key component of realizing Eisai’s hhc mission requires us to act as stewards of our local community, building and maintaining trust with our neighbors. This move will help us continue our work to address unmet patient and caregiver needs and apply our scientific expertise and technology to make a meaningful treatment impact in oncology and neurology.

We are proud to build upon our longtime presence in the state with this revolutionary campus. Our new 332,800-square-foot facility brings approximately 800 jobs to the Nutley-Clifton area, potentially creating more jobs within the state. At full capacity, the Eisai US hhceco Center will accommodate 1,300 employees.

With the establishment of our Eisai US hhceco Center, we bring a dedicated commitment to addressing pressing medical challenges in cancer, Alzheimer's disease and other neurological diseases.
